Gabby Agbonlahor warns Liverpool to not sign Chelsea’s Mason Mount due to his goals tally

Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has warned Liverpool to not sign Chelsea star Mason Mount in the transfer window.

The England international faces an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge with his contract expiring next summer. He is yet to sign an extension there.

Liverpool have kept the 24-year-old as their primary target for the upcoming summer transfer window as they aim to bolster the midfield department.

But, Agbonlahor does not think Mount is good enough as a player to be signed by the Reds. Here’s what he said (h/t Liverpool Echo, via Talksport):

“He scored 27 goals in 129 appearances, it’s not fantastic is it, let’s be honest. The stats how that he’s not [a great player]. He’s an okay player but he’s not doing outstanding.

“Mason Mount is an attacking midfielder, he should be scoring goals. He brings nothing. Odegaard’s got 14 goals in one season.”

While we live in a world where everyone is entitled to an opinion, it seems like Agbonlahor has not seen Mount play much in the past two years. The 24-year-old got 11 goals and 10 assists in 32 league appearances last season. Martin Odegaard has scored 15 goals and assisted eight in 34 league games in the current campaign.

We are not talking about what Mount did this season because Chelsea have been terrible on and off the field and he was being used in unusual positions by Graham Potter.

What the Englishman brings is technical quality on the ball, versatility in midfield and attacking options, immense work rate and a certain amount of goals and assists from midfield.

The way Jurgen Klopp has had Liverpool midfielders playing, we have never had a proper goal-scoring midfielder here. His system relies on midfielders being prudent on the ball and defensively aware in transitions. Mount can do that and add goals to the team.

So, irrespective of what Agbonlahor says, Liverpool must focus on getting Mount this summer. What he does at Chelsea won’t matter if he comes here at Liverpool, plays under a new boss and in a new system. What matters is that he has the raw minerals to make it as a quality midfielder.
