“I am not worried for him”- Ian Wright backs 23-year-old Liverpool star to become even better next season

Arsenal legend Ian Wright not worried about Darwin Nunez and his goal-scoring prowess at Liverpool

Liverpool great Robbie Fowler recently expressed his doubts about whether 23-year-old Darwin Nunez would be as prolific as people expect him to be at Anfield.

Since arriving from Benfica last summer, Nunez had a short pre-season with the squad, there was a language barrier and the team hasn’t played well compared to previous campaigns.

Despite all of that, the Uruguayan has scored 15 goals and assisted four in 42 appearances in all competitions. Granted that he has missed a few too many chances, but the traits and basics in his game are there for it to flourish once he settles down properly.

But Ian Wright, for one, is not worried about the former SL Benfica star. He backs him to score more next season and prove his worth. The Arsenal legend was asked on BBC’s Match of the Day (from 42:28 on Match of the Day via BBC iPlayer) if Nunez will score more next season. He replied:

“Absolutely, especially when you see the chances that he is getting, the chances he is missing. Next season he will liven himself up, get more intense in respects of his goalscoring, and then he will finish those. I am not worried for him.”

While we are giving him the leeway for this season, Darwin Nunez must make sure that he comes back strong in the next season and show why Liverpool paid the big bucks to get him last summer.

If he does that, it would help the forward line in sharing the load of scoring and being a menace to the opposition defenders consistently.

Irrespective of how we perceive his first season at Anfield to be, the Uruguayan is definitely not another “Andy Carroll” as people of other clubs sing for him. He is better than Carroll by a marked distance.

We can only hope that Nunez has a good pre-season, learns the language well enough to communicate better on the field and has worked on the deficiencies in his game to start firing on all cylinders for Liverpool.

More Liverpool News:

Jurgen Klopp is a patient manager and we would expect the German to give the striker enough time and coaching to flourish. Wright, who won two first-division titles with Arsenal as a player, knows a thing or two about scoring goals. Neither does he have any affiliations with Liverpool to mindlessly praise Nunez.

His comments would relax Liverpool fans to a large extent. Keep patience, and Nunez will come good.
