Liverpool could take advantage of ‘release clause’ to land 24-year-old South American star

Liverpool can take advantage of release clause to land Brighton ace Alexis Mac Allister

According to the Athletic (Subscription Required) [h/t Daily Mail], Liverpool have been handed a potential boost in their pursuit of Brighton & Hove Albion star Alexis Mac Allister ahead of the 2023 summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old earned rave reviews for his performances with Argentina at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Mac Allister played a key role in his nation’s triumph and has also carried over that form and consistency to the Premier League.

This has garnered him attention from not just Liverpool but also Manchester United. The Reds are in the market for several midfield reinforcements and the 24-year-old attributes certainly fit the bill to a tee.

While he is unlikely to come cheap, Liverpool could make use of a ‘release clause’ in the 24-year-old’s contract to ease negotiations. While the exact details of the clause are far from public knowledge, it does offer us some hope in reaching an agreement with Brighton.

Given that we need more than one addition next summer, Liverpool cannot afford to blow their transfer kitty on one player. It makes little sense for us to bow out of the race for Jude Bellingham only to go and spend that money on Mac Allister.

As far as we know, the clause gives Brighton more control over the outcome of the negotiations. It is not the typical case where an interested club can secure the player by paying a fixed fee.

So far, no side has reached an agreement with Brighton for their Argentine star. Mac Allister’s deal at the Amex runs until 2025 and Brighton have little reason to sell. Hopefully, we can bag Champions League football for next season, adding another draw in our favour to attract Alexis Mac Allister to Anfield.

Mac Allister’s ability to carry the ball forward and energy will re-enliven the Liverpool midfield. This key weakness needs to be addressed if we are to continue our rebuild under Jurgen Klopp. Beating Manchester United to the top four before trumping them to Mac Allister would be beautiful indeed.

We will not only strengthen our midfield but prevent them from adding a quality, Premier League-proven midfielder to their squad.
