Jamie Redknapp has said that Liverpool will put pressure on Manchester United in the top-four race as they lost to West Ham United earlier today (May 7).
Liverpool recorded a hugely important 1-0 win against Brentford on Saturday at Anfield to make it six wins in six. They are now on a roll, while Manchester United have now lost two winnable games on the trot.
They lost 1-0 to Brighton & Hove Albion where Alexis Mac Allister
scored a 99th-minute penalty while West Ham won at the London Stadium by the same scoreline.Speaking after the Reds’ win against the Bees and before Manchester United faced West Ham United, former Liverpool midfielder and current Sky Sports pundit Redknapp said, via Manchester Evening News:
“Momentum is key in sport and if you can get that in games – you can see what it means to Jurgen Klopp. I think in April they were 12 points behind the top four and 15 behind Manchester United, now it is just a point, albeit with the two games in hand. But they will put the pressure on Manchester United with the way their form is at the moment.”
Momentum really is key. Hardly anyone would have expected Liverpool to go on a six-game winning run after our horrible start to the season.
The Red Devils, meanwhile, are dropping points and are being bested by their opponents while doing that. They look like a team in trouble – one that is scared of bottling the top-four race despite holding a huge gap over Liverpool earlier this year.
To add to our delight, Mikel Arteta-led Arsenal beat Newcastle United 2-0 at St. James’ Park to give us two teams to target in the race for UEFA Champions League spots. Newcastle and Manchester United have 65 and 63 points from 34 games, respectively.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are fifth with 62 points with a game in hand. Let’s keep winning. It will be akin to winning a trophy at this point.
