Liverpool eye a move for Ron-Robert Zieler as a backup option to Alisson Becker
As per German outlet Bild (h/t Metro), Liverpool are eyeing up a move for Hannover 96 goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler as a backup to number one Alisson Becker.
Zieler has been in the Premier League before. The German was part of the Manchester United squad between 2005-2010 but never made a first-team appearance. He came back to England to play for Leicester during the 2016/17 season and made 13 appearances.
The German international is currently in his second stint at Hannover, a second-tier club in German football. A move to a huge Premier League club, even as a backup for Alisson, could prove to be a step up for him late in his career.
Caoimhin Kelleher has been deputising Alisson very well in the last few years, but the Irishman is keen to leave Anfield to play more regularly. He is only 24, so this decision is a sensible one keeping his career in mind.
The Irish Independent has reported that Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton and Brentford are interested in signing the Cork-born shot-stopper. Liverpool won’t stand in his way and have placed a price tag of £20m.
If and when Kelleher leaves, the backup slot to Alisson will be empty. That is where the Zieler links make sense.
The German is an experienced keeper who is currently having an excellent in the second-tier Bundesliga. Although his contract with Hannover runs until next summer (Transfermarkt), the forthcoming Liverpool director Jorg Schmadtke knows him very well and may influence him to come to Anfield this summer.
We tend to forget how important it is to have a competent backup goalkeeper in the squad. While Alisson is great at his job, there are no guarantees that he will never get injured.
