Liverpool are in talks with Jorg Schmadtke for a temporary support role only

As per German outlet Bild (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are said to be in talks with Jorg Schmadtke only for a temporary role as an external transfer consultant.

A couple of days ago, widespread reports in the United Kingdom revealed that the Reds are set to appoint Schmadtke as the next sporting director. The latest updates quash that claim.

It remains to be seen which source is telling us the truth. The 59-year-old has worked as a director before at German clubs Koln, Wolfsburg and Hannover. He seems to have a good sense of humour, a revelation that did not make much sense.

All this is because Julian Ward is set to depart Liverpool in the summer, leaving the sporting director role up for grabs. He played a good role in succeeding Michael Edwards, and both have played their roles in some key signings in the Jurgen Klopp era.

In whichever capacity Schmadtke is appointed, it might be an important addition to the club setup during an expectedly busy transfer window because of the number of signings they are about to make.

He is, after all, good mates with Jurgen Klopp, which would be a great help in having an aligned opinion (unless the previous relationship was strained).

The role of a sporting director in the modern game is more apparent. With managers not diving into the transfer dealings anymore, the sporting director acts as a bridge between the manager and the signings the club are making.

With how much a manager and a director are close in terms of their roles at the club, the two people must be compatible with each other for the relationship to work positively.
