Alexis Mac Allister wants to play for a Champions League club amidst Liverpool interest

As per the Athletic (subscription required), Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Alexis Mac Allister wants to play for a club competing in the Champions League amidst interest from Liverpool.

Apart from the Reds, rivals Manchester United are also interested in the Argentina international. As of now, United are ahead of Liverpool in the table and more likely to play Champions League football next season than Jurgen Klopp‘s men.

The report also reveals that the player’s agent, his father Carlos, hasn’t agreed on a deal with any club yet. The ending to this season may have a significant say in where the 24-year-old will head in the coming summer window.

It would be interesting to know Mac Allister’s stance if Liverpool and United play Champions League football next season with Newcastle United dropping out. The Argentine may have a hand if the Magpies are to drop out as Brighton play them on Thursday.

In the win over Arsenal on Sunday, the 24-year-old once again stood out in the midfield. His composure on the ball and work rate off it is commendable. His tactical understanding is of an elite level too.

If he just wants to play Champions League football, irrespective of the football club, that is not a good look for a player. Although this report is from the Athletic, it does seem like something cobbled through to attract interest from the clubs who have already qualified for that competition next season.

As Klopp said, Liverpool are still an attractive prospect for players to come and play, even if they might have to play one season in the Europa League. The German himself is a massive pull for the players because one of the best managers around.

Let’s hope this Champions League condition is not true and Mac Allister wants to play for a club and manager he is interested in, and not dictated by external terms. If it turns out to be a telling factor, then fifth-placed Liverpool better close down the four-point gap from Newcastle United and Man United with three games left this season.
