Liverpool leading the race to land two quality Premier League midfielders for £120m

Liverpool leading the race to land Chelsea’s Mason Mount and Brighton star Alexis Mac Allister for £120m

Liverpool are thought to be leading the race to sign Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount and Brighton Hove Albion star Alexis Mac Allister.

The Mirror states that the Reds could sign the England international for £50million but it would depend on Mauricio Pochettino’s view on the transfer once he becomes Chelsea’s new permanent manager.

Meanwhile, Mac Allister is ready to commit his future to Liverpool. The Reds want to ‘end the race’ for the 24-year-old who has also drawn interest from Arsenal and Manchester United by submitting a £70million

That is a huge sum for Mac Allister. Would that be the same price tag Brighton would have demanded or the Reds would have been willing to pay before the 2022 FIFA World Cup?

The right move?

Perhaps not. He was part of an Argentina side that thoroughly impressed in Qatar and he showed he is capable of running an elite team’s midfield. He even assisted Angel di Maria’s goal in the final against France.

But we could be victims of paying a big price tag just because the player had a few good games internationally. Make no mistake, he has been brilliant in the Premier League as well.

And there is no doubt that he will be a beautiful addition to a very boring, ageing, injury-ridden Liverpool midfield that we have been made to see over recent months. But that price will make sense only if it doesn’t deviate our plans to sign more players.

Signing just Mac Allister will do nothing. James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita could leave as free agents while Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara don’t get any younger. We not only have to replace the outgoing players but also sign upgrades on the ones we have.

Mount and Mac Allister will be two good signings but we will need more than that to be able to challenge the likes of Manchester City in England and Real Madrid in Europe.
