Liverpool ‘interested’ in former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham

Following links with Napoli star Victor Osimhen very recently, Liverpool have supposedly shown interest in another Serie A striker, and this time, it is English international Tammy Abraham who is playing under Jose Mourinho at AS Roma.

Liverpool.com recently spoke about the Reds’ interest in Osimhen, but now, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are among six clubs looking to sign former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham this summer.

The 25-year-old has nine goals and seven assists in 48 appearances across all competitions this season. Under Mourinho, at least in this Roma side, the style of play has been more or less defensive because of which the goal output seems less than average, but we have seen what Tammy can do with the right people and the right tactics during his time at Chelsea.

The motive of the potential move for Abraham is probably finding a replacement for the outgoing Roberto Firmino. While it is extremely tough to replace the Brazilian, Cody Gakpo fits in well in that False 9 role.

Should Tammy join Liverpool?

Moreover, we have five players in the attack fighting for the last three spots at the moment, two of them almost certain – Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz on the wing with either Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo or Darwin Nunez through the middle.

There is no actual need for another 9 at the club, at this stage. However, we could do with a backup for Mo, who has been running down the right wing for the Reds relentlessly ever since his move in 2017, from guess where? Roma.

Given the depth of attacking quality at Liverpool, it certainly doesn’t make sense for the club to spend resources on adding to that department.

That is not even the point though. Liverpool need midfielders more than any other club in the world and they should ideally invest all their resources in bringing in the top talents to Anfield over the summer.

And as far as Tammy is concerned, there is no doubt about his quality. But it would be best if we give way to Chelsea, Manchester United, Newcastle, Tottenham and Aston Villa in their pursuit of the Englishman.
