Alisson Becker talks about role of his teammates in his new contract with Liverpool

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker recently discussed negotiating a new deal during the coronavirus epidemic following the passing of his father.

The 30-year-old inked a new contract in August 2021 that would keep him with the team through 2027. However, six months before signing a new deal, his father drowned in a lake not far from his vacation house in southern Brazil, which was devastating news for his family.

However, Liverpool in general also had a difficult season in 2020–21, as they struggled to finish in the top four and were without Virgil Van Dijk for the full season due to injury. You can also use a to join and make your predictions for the next season.

Alisson was among the most impacted players that season since he elected to stay with his wife, who was then pregnant, instead of travelling to Brazil after the death of his father.

In an interview, (h/t Liverpool Echo) the Brazilian custodian described how everyone helped him sign a long-term contract, saying:

“Nobody thinks about losing dad or mum or loved one suddenly or so quick but so many people at that moment were going through with Covid times, so many people were losing loved ones and I think the world was in a place where everybody was ready to show love for people and not only Liverpool, the boys here at the club were amazing, everybody, the staff, everybody I think they felt my pain together and they pushed me forward.”

“Of course, when I signed a new deal, a long-term deal at this club, I thought a lot at this moment that everybody was there for me, and I have this feeling that I want to be here for the club as well, keep making history, keep this atmosphere that we have as a family.”

The 2020–21 season was perhaps one of our worst campaigns in recent memory; we lost key players to injury and lost six straight games at home, but we managed to turn things around before the season ended and finished third.

Alisson, whose father passed away during the season, played a significant role in our ability to qualify for the Champions League. His most well-known goal came against West Bromwich Albion in stoppage time, which was the first goal scored by a Liverpool custodian in 129 years.
