Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones on his best performance in a win over Leicester City

Curtis Jones thinks this was his best performance in a Liverpool shirt after the midfielder scored a brace in helping the Reds beat Leicester City by 3-0 at the King Power Stadium.

While the first goal was a graceful first-touch finish (similar to that against Tottenham Hotspur two weeks ago), the second goal had a special nature to it. The way he swivelled on the first touch to take the shot early and beat the keeper via a shot attempt from the edge of the box was sensational.

Not just the goals though, Jones was exceptional in general play – be it pressing and counter-pressing, being secure on the ball, reading the game well and making telling runs towards the opposition box.

Here’s what the 22-year-old said after the game when asked if this was his best performance in a Liverpool shirt (h/t BBC):

“I think so yeah, definitely. It was a game where I had the ball a lot and I scored two as well. I was off for 15 weeks, I had a hard time, so now I’m back and I’m in the team, scoring goals and helping the team. I’ll just try to continue.

“We do a lot of shooting in training. I’m playing games and settling in. You get more by being around the box so that’s what I’m doing. The day before a game we always have a [shooting] competition.”

If we look at his numbers provided by Fotmob, Jones had a pass completion rate of 91%, created two chances, had 79 touches of the ball, only got dispossessed once, made three tackles at a 100% success rate and completed five ball recoveries.

Now, that is what you call an all-round performance of a central midfielder. And this has not been a one-off from the 22-year-old.

Since starting against Chelsea five weeks ago, he has started in every game since and played a major part in Liverpool winning the last seven league games. Jurgen Klopp is thoroughly vindicated for giving him the opportunities.

For his and the team’s sake, we hope this continues for the final two games of the season before a much-deserved break for the players.
