Ajax Amsterdam centre-back Jurrien Timber continues to be on the radar of Erik ten Hag at Manchester United while Liverpool are also believed to be interested.
Keeping this in mind, two former Netherlands internationals, Andy van der Meyde and Wesley Sneijder, were discussing Ajax’s title chances in the upcoming seasons. They talked about how the Dutch giants can raise money with player sales.
Van der Meyde, who played several matches for the Netherlands’ senior team from 2002 to 2004, said on Veronica Offside, via Dutch outlet Voetbolzone.nl :
“…Timber will probably go to Liverpool. They also pay crazy money. Then you can start building again.”
The Reds can use a young, fit and agile centre-back like Timber. Those who have seen the 21-year-old would know that he is also pretty decent in possession and with his passing. Not to mention, he has a high ceiling and can learn new tricks regularly alongside a world-class defender like Van Dijk.
Moreover, Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo would know him from the Netherlands senior set-up, with the trio playing at the 2022 FIFA World Cup together. Hopefully, that plays a role in giving us an advantage in this race.
That being said, perhaps Manchester United also have a big Dutch connection through Ten Hag, who managed the player at Ajax. Tyrell Malacia (Dutch), Lisandro Martinez and Antony (former Ajax teammates) would also be familiar to him.
We can probably go another season without a fifth senior centre-back, granted we don’t lose any of Joel Matip, Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk due to injury or any other reason. That being said, it is best to move quickly when it comes to signing a player like Timber, because other teams will take notice.
