David Ornstein: Jorg Schmadtke will be in Liverpool this week to finalise his short-term move to the club
As per David Ornstein of the Athletic (subscription required), Jorg Schmadtke is due to arrive in Liverpool this week to finalise his move as a sporting director of the club.
The report also mentions that the Reds will be in the sporting director market because Schmadtke will initially come for a short-term role.
The outgoing director Julian Ward will hand over the reins to the German, who will work with the current structure that has already done most of the groundwork for the activities that will be done during the summer transfer window.
If the former Wolfsburg director does well here, there is a chance that his deal extend and he stays for a longer term at Anfield.
Liverpool are undergoing a lot of changes and this season felt like a transitional period. Four players – Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita, James Milner, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will leave on a free transfer, while the likes of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho need help with midfield additions.
Coming back to Schmadtke, although he is German and knows Jurgen Klopp, the latter has made it clear this director appointment is not his personal choice. The club has decided on him.
Chris Bascombe of the Telegraph has reported that Klopp relayed his transfer plans and targets to the club a while ago. The hierarchy is negotiating the deals to make the signings as early as possible in the window.

It would be great if Liverpool get the new players in before the start of the pre-season. What it will do is allow the new arrivals to gel with the rest of the squad and integrate with the tactical system in the best possible manner.
