Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse addresses his future amid Liverpool links
James Ward-Prowse’s future is in doubt after Southampton’s relegation, with Liverpool reportedly showing interest in the midfielder. The 28-year-old midfielder, like every other transfer window, again sees himself linked with a move to the Reds, but this time, Southampton’s relegation changes the scenario a tad bit.
However, St. Mary’s beloved straight away dismissed any talk of moving on from his boyhood club. James Ward-Prowse‘s final league game for a while in case he decides to continue with Southampton would be this weekend against Liverpool.
The free-kick specialist has been on the Reds’ radar for quite a while now, and according to Football Insider, Goal (h/t Liverpool ECHO) stated that Anfield officials scouted him about three-four seasons back as well.
Here is what Ward-Prowse had to say when asked whether he thinks of moving on from The Saints to another Premier League club in an interview with BBC Radio Solent Sport:
“It would be unprofessional to be thinking too far ahead. I’ve just heard the news about Ruben [Selles] which is a decision by the club. We’re focusing on giving him the respect of our full working capacity to be ready for the weekend.”
Ward-Prowse to the Reds?
Understandably, he would not want to leave his boyhood club in such a situation and as a captain, would want to propel the club back to the Premier League wherein they have been part of a great few seasons and acted as our ‘feeder club’ as well giving us the likes of Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana, Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk.
Speaking of Ward-Prowse though, in case he doesn’t wish to move to the Reds, we must accept that fact and move on to other alternatives who could fit in our plans better. The likes of Mason Mount and Alexis Mac Allister are younger options who provide what JWP does and beyond as well.
As the transfer window progresses, Liverpool FC will undoubtedly continue to explore potential options to bolster their midfield options. However, it remains to be seen whether Ward-Prowse will be a part of their plans or if the talented midfielder will remain loyal to Southampton.
For now, the speculation surrounding Ward-Prowse’s future remains uncertain. Liverpool will respect his professional stance, and Southampton will continue to rely on their captain’s contributions as they aim to reclaim their spot in the top flight of English football.
