Liverpool team news ahead of final Premier League fixture vs Southampton
Manager Jurgen Klopp provided team news for Liverpool ahead of the Reds’ final Premier League fixture this season. The Reds would hope to end it on a high after a campaign full of highs and lows, ending with them only finishing in a Europa League spot.
The good news for Liverpool is that striker Darwin Nunez trained ahead of the game against the Saints at St. Mary’s and here is what else Jurgen Klopp had to say about the rest of the Liverpool squad via ECHO:
“He [Nunez] trained yesterday. Ibou was ill. Robbo felt something in his groin and we have to see how he deal with that.”
Given how we are certain of a Europa League finish, there is room for experimentation in this final game. Given Ibrahima Konate didn’t train due to illness, one could expect Joe Gomez to start in place of him.
Who could feature vs Southampton?
Andrew Robertson and his groin issue could mean Kostas Tsimikas could start instead of him. Fabinho could have Jordan Henderson and Curtis Jones on either side of himself in midfield. The usual wingers Luis Diazand Mohamed Salah up front.
Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez could obviously fight for a place in the XI alongside Cody Gakpo for playing through the middle. Loan signing Arthur Melo is yet to play for the Reds beyond those 13 minutes he did against Napoli in the 4-1 away loss earlier this season.
If there is enough room. the Reds could take the risk of featuring Arthur in the game against Southampton. However, that also raises the question of why would he deserve a chance over a number of youngsters who have a future with Liverpool.
In any case, Liverpool would want to finish the season on a high and so would be the case for Southampton, who won’t feature in the Premier League next season and hope to return to the top flight the season after.
