As per Goal (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have made contact with Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes over a possible move in the summer transfer window.
It is also revealed that La Liga champions Barcelona are also in the race to sign the Brazil international, who played a key role in Newcastle finishing in the top four this season.
Guimaraes has quickly become a fan favourite at St. James’ Park and Newcastle boss Eddie Howe wants
him to get a new contract that will make him one of the highest-paid players in the Premier League. The report also states that while Liverpool and Barcelona are interested, the midfielder would prefer to sign a new deal with Newcastle.
The 25-year-old is a versatile midfield player who can play in a midfield pivot, as a central midfielder or as an attacking midfielder. For the Geordies this season, he got five goals and five assists in 40 appearances in all competitions.
Guimaraes is a technically solid player who is good on the ball, can cover a lot of ground during games, can add goals and assists from midfield and is an excellent reader of the game. He is just an outstanding all-round midfield player.
Although Liverpool need more than one midfielder this summer, it does not seem likely that the 25-year-old will leave a chance to play Champions League football with Newcastle to join a club which is in transition at the moment.
Furthermore, the Geordies have Saudi owners now, hence coping with the wage demands of their star player would not be an issue for them.
So, it would make sense if Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp do not keep Guimaraes as one of the possible targets this summer and look at other solutions.
