Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian Set for new contract

36-year-old Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian San Miguel has confirmed that he is on the verge of signing a contract extension with the club.

The Spaniard’s current deal expires this summer (Transfermarkt), but talks with the management are at an advanced stage, as revealed in an interview with The Athletic. Adrian expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing negotiations, emphasizing his strong bond with both the manager and the club.

He acknowledged the importance of having a deep squad with dedicated individuals who contribute fully in training every day. The goalkeeper’s positive attitude and commitment have earned him admiration from the coaching staff, which has likely played a role in the contract talks progressing smoothly.

Here is what Adrian told The Athletic:

“I have a great relationship with the manager and the club. We’ve been in talks and we’re really close,”

“I know the situation and my role in the squad. Everyone wants to play and have minutes on the pitch, but you also need a big squad with good people who will commit everything every day in training.”

As it stands, Liverpool boasts a talented pool of goalkeeping options. Alongside the 36-year-old, the Reds have the exceptional Alisson, Caoimhin Kelleher, Marcelo Pitaluga, Harvey Davies, and Vitezslav Jaros, the latter three of whom are currently with the age group squads.

However, ECHO suggests that Kelleher could be seeking more regular first-team opportunities and might be considering a move away from Anfield. Such a decision would undoubtedly impact the goalkeeper pecking order and potentially influence Liverpool’s plans for the upcoming season.

While Adrian understands the desire for playing time, he also recognizes the importance of a united and committed squad. His attitude and professionalism have certainly endeared him to the coaching staff.

His last appearance for the Reds came in the FA Community Shield win against Manchester City in the curtain-raiser to the league season, back in July.

While a number of Liverpool supporters will not really be eagerly anticipating the resolution of Adrian’s contract situation, the other half would possibly wait for the same and the announcement of his continued presence at Anfield.
