Manchester City in talks with Liverpool target Josko Gvardiol

In what could surely shape to become a significant dent to Liverpool FC’s transfer plans, rivals Manchester City have entered the fray for Josko Gvardiol who’s on the Reds’ radar and have also held talks with the 21-year-old Croatian.

According to Football Insider via ECHO, Man City have entered talks with Josko Gvardiol, who not until very long ago, was among the active transfer targets for Liverpool. The RB Leipzig centre-back saw himself linked with a move to the Reds following the news of uncertain futures for a few of the Reds’ current centre-backs.

Gvardiol’s performance in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in late 2022 saw his stock go up by a considerable amount. His performances were surely key in pushing the Croatians until the semi-finals where eventual champions Argentina, and specifically, Lionel Messi got the better of Gvardiol and his team.

For Liverpool, apart from the attacking department, there is certainly no surplus and the Reds could surely do with reinforcements in all departments. Gvardiol is among the top players with a link to the Reds, but the question of whether or not the Reds could afford his price is something that pops up more often than not.

Could Gvardiol join the Reds?

According to a recent report from ECHO, Leipzig value their star defender very highly and would not part ways with him for less than £80m. Even though the Reds’ interest has been pretty imminent due to the lack of quality performances on the part of the Reds’ defenders, the steepness in price could surely mean Liverpool find themselves out of the race.

While Gvardiol, 21, would be an astounding signing for the long-term project but with a shortage of financial resources in the summer window thanks to FSG’s frugal behaviour, it is crucial to utilize the mazuma in areas in which there is more urgency, like the midfield.

While it would obviously be extremely nice to see the owners spend money, Gvardiol’s stock could stand overvalued at the moment only due to his top-class performances in the World Cup, and rightly so.

The Reds could surely find other players who could fit in their plans and not burn a hole as big as Gvardiol’s potential transfer could. And that is why, the Reds should probably have a look into the transfer market from a wider point of view, and get on board a much cheaper alternative.

If only RB Leipzig lower their expectations is when Liverpool could come back into the picture, but if they persist with the heavy price tag, his move to Manchester City or wherever he would end up next season would become just a matter of time.

Hopefully he can see the likes of Aymeric Laporte, John Stones, Manuel Akanji, Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias at the club – and how tough it will be to leapfrog them to regular first-team football.
