Goncalo Inacio extension talks on hold amid Liverpool links
Contrary to a report from Record via ECHO from yesterday, Sporting CP centre-back Goncalo Inacio has put a halt to the discussions pertaining to a contract extension which could excite Liverpool.
According to O Jogo via ECHO, talks between Inacio’s representatives and Sporting CP have ‘frozen’ as the 21-year-old ‘awaits the market’ for any other suitable recruiters. Liverpool are in need of central defenders, and Goncalo Inacio is a player with a high ceiling.
Liverpool should take full use of the halt in negotiations and jump right in to try and vouch for themselves a strong case even though the name is enough for any player to feel the pull. Following the poor form of our defenders this season, it is natural that the recruiters dip into the market to get reinforcements.
We all have seen the form of our defenders this season, and they could surely do with some new faces in there. The form is not even the only issue though, as the pair of Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip aren’t getting any younger by the day, and are comfortably in their thirties.
Liverpool need new centre-halves
Even though their qualities are top-notch, the truth of the matter is their world-class abilities have also seen a significant drop-off and nobody would be lying if they say Liverpool could do themselves a world of good with some new quality defenders.
Moreover, Joe Gomez has been blowing hot and cold. He was excellent against Manchester City at home and paved the way for Kaoru Mitoma to take his case away at the Amex.
Inconsistencies have been a huge roadblock in the player’s progress as a player, and Ibrahima Konate alone would surely not stand sufficient for Liverpool. Investing in a new defender is surely crucial, even though it is not the biggest priority.
That surely is enough reason why the Reds need defensive reinforcements. Moving forward, it seems like manager Jurgen Klopp will push Trent Alexander-Arnold into advanced roles resulting in a back-three of sorts.

Players like Inacio who are left-footed centre-backs, could benefit Liverpool to a great extent. If it were up to the fans, Inacio would’ve already been announced by now. He has a contract until 2026 (Transfermarkt) and Sporting want to increase his current release clause of €45m to €60m.
