Alexis Mac Allister reveals Jurgen Klopp was the reason why he chose Liverpool over other interested clubs
New Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister reveals that Jurgen Klopp was key behind his decision to choose the Reds over other clubs.
A few days ago, Liverpool completed the deal to sign the Argentina international from Brighton and Hove Albion for an initial fee of around £35m.
Metro revealed that Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino made an 11th-hour attempt to sign the 24-year-old, while the Times shared that he snubbed a move to Manchester United for joining the Reds.
Here’s what Mac Allister said when asked about his move to Anfield (h/t ESPN Argentina, via Daily Mail):
“I had the chance to talk to him [Klopp]. It was one of the most important things to make the decision so early in the market.
“I saw the desire to have myself and the desire to continue winning titles for the club, so for me it was very important.
“To arrive at one of the biggest clubs in the world and the biggest in England is a great joy and a dream.”
There is a reason there was optimism amongst Liverpool fans that the club will be able to attract top players despite missing out on the Champions League for next season.
Klopp has the pull and charisma to lure good players towards working with him over a long-term project.
It won’t be an overstatement to say that Mac Allister signed for Liverpool thinking that he can play a major part in the team playing Europe’s elite competition from the 2024/25 season onwards.
For the Reds, the Argentine has all the qualities to become a key member of the squad. He can play anywhere in midfield and do well. His work rate is top notch and his technical ability is of a very high level.

The other good thing about this deal was the timing of it. If he doesn’t get injured during the international friendlies, Mac Allister can join the Liverpool squad from the first day of pre-season starting next month. That might be important in his integration and understanding of every tactical bit required to succeed under Klopp. Let’s hope it all goes well!
