Brighton confirm James Milner signing from Liverpool as Roberto De Zerbi gives his first words

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Robert De Zerbi has expressed his delight at his club confirming the signing of James Milner from Liverpool.

It has been common knowledge in recent weeks that he would leave the Reds as a free agent. It has now been confirmed that he has chosen Brighton as his next destination.

According to a statement released by Brighton’s official website, Milner will arrive as a free agent and sign a one-year contract. There will be an option to extend his deal for another year.

De Zerbi said:

“I’m very glad to welcome James to Brighton. He’s an excellent addition for us and I’m sure he will help to bring us to an even higher level.”

Good luck, vice captain

The level of experience he brings is unmatched. He has played over 850 senior games as a professional and has been a regular in the Premier League for more than two decades.

At 37, he is no longer as fast or fit as he was in his heyday but for us, he has been a reliable player for each of the eight years he has been here. When others have been injured, Milner has come to the rescue.

He has even had stints as a full-back under Jurgen Klopp, showing just how brilliant and selfless he has been for the team – playing in a position he wasn’t familiar with, and excelling there.

His leadership will surely be missed. One can argue that he stayed at Liverpool for one season too long but that can’t be his fault. Klopp and co. should have started the midfield rebuild last year and kept Milner as a leading dressing-room figure, rather than relying upon him in important games.

Brighton and De Zerbi seem to understand his value. With Alexis Mac Allister already at Anfield and Moises Caicedo’s future uncertain, they can use Milner over the course of the season.
