Transfer News: Liverpool favourites to sign Real Madrid target Gabri Veiga
Liverpool have termed as the favourites to sign Celta Vigo star Gabri Veiga ahead of Real Madrid, Chelsea and Newcastle United. The player is believed to have a £35million release clause in his contract at the club he has spent his entire career at so far.
According to the Northern Echo, Liverpool have completed a lot of groundwork to get a deal over the line. They are termed as the ‘likeliest’ destination for the up-and-coming Celta star.
Veiga is a goal-scoring midfielder who can make tangible contributions to the team. He managed a return of 11 goals and four assists in 40 games this season.
Those are superb numbers for a 21-year-old midfielder. We can use someone like that – midfielders that contribute G+A have long been absent from our team.
Veiga to Liverpool?
Veiga would probably look over his shoulders and see the competition for starts at Real Madrid. If Luka Modric and Toni Kroos end up staying beyond the summer, Los Blancos will have Eduardo Camavinga, Dani Cellabos and Aurelien Tchouameni along with them in their squad.
At Liverpool, the competition is less. Jordan Henderson has become painfully average, Thiago Alcantara spends a lot of time on the sidelines, while Fabio Carvalho, Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones are probably not as good as Veiga in midfield.
The Spaniard, after all, is a natural midfielder. The names above are players who have been turned into central midfielders after playing down the flanks for most of their youth careers.
It is a good thing we are doing our business early. Veiga would be a fantastic young addition to the team after the signing of Alexis Mac Allister.

We could do with one more addition – a player who specialises in the defensive part of the game to offer competition from Fabinho. This player would need to be experienced and world-class.
