Glen Johnson believes Liverpool should make a late punt for Ruben Neves

Speaking to Betfred (h/t Birmingham World), Glen Johnson believes Wolverhampton Wanderers star Ruben Neves would be a quality addition at Liverpool.

The Portuguese star is among the best midfielders in the Premier League and at 26 is entering the prime of his career. Neves is an excellent passer and is also a daft hand when it comes to striking the dead ball.

Neves has attracted attention from several teams including Liverpool but his next step appears to be a sojourn to the middle east. This after the midfielder agreed to a summer switch to the Saudi side Al Hilal in a deal worth about £47 million.

It is no secret that Liverpool need a full revamp of their midfield. Losing Naby Keita, James Milner, and Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain all left this summer while Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara, and Jordan Henderson aren’t getting any younger.

Alexis Mac Allister has already been signed but the Reds need much more than just the World Cup winner this summer. Neves is a proven talent in the Premier League and would suit Liverpool’s style to a tee. At least that is what Johnson believes.

“I do believe he’s good enough to start in Liverpool’s midfield.”

Johnson believes injuries could be the lone hindrance to Neves succeeding at Anfield. Of course, it is all hypothetical right now given that the Reds are yet to make a move this summer.

“As long as he can maintain the same level of form and can remain injury free, then he could be a good addition to Liverpool’s midfield.”

While we would like to see Liverpool make a late play to land Neves, it will have to be a bid higher than the £47 million Al Hilal are ready to fork out. It is difficult to see FSG sanction such a high amount. Unfortunately for Johnson, this ship appears to have sailed.

The summer window is still young and there is still time for Liverpool to make a splash. Whether we will really do so or not remains to be seen.
