Romano: Liverpool are ready to offer players in exchange for Belgian ace

Fabrizio Romano says Liverpool could offer players in exchange to Southampton for Romeo Lavia

Speaking to GiveMeSport, reliable Italian transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Liverpool are considering offering players in exchange for Southampton star Romeo Lavia.

The 19-year-old was one of the Saints’ best players in an otherwise uninspiring 2022/23 campaign that saw them relegated. However, the Belgian stood out thanks to his performances and is being courted by a plethora of clubs in the top flight this summer.

Having already signed Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, the Reds’ summer midfield revamp has gotten off to a promising start. They do, however, need more additions including a defensive midfielder who can make a difference in the middle of the park and also compete with Fabinho.

Lavia is still rough around the edges but will give Liverpool two major advantages. Not only will he be considered homegrown but will also future-proof the position, hopefully for the upcoming decade. While Jurgen Klopp remains a fan, Southampton’s hefty £50 million asking price remains an obstacle.

As things stand, the Reds are unwilling to play ball at the price and are seeking to lower it. Romano has now revealed that Liverpool will attempt to make up for the deficit through add-ons or by offering players in exchange.

But sources believe that maybe, with some add-ons or with a creative formula such as including some players, they can find a way with Southampton to reach an agreement.”

While offering players in exchange is an interesting option, the question that needs to be asked is who we part with. Having released the likes of James Milner, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain among others this summer, we are short of options.

A move to Southampton is also a step down given that any player traded will be playing in the Championship. However, there is an opportunity here as the likes of Tyler Morton could help the Saints in their fight for promotion and also provide them with a readymade replacement for Lavia. It is in our best interests to send a few of our top young talents on a season-long loan, marking a clear win-win for all parties.

Either way, it depends on whether we can come up with a solution that can convince Southampton into selling their star man. Having done business with them in the past, it will not prove to be an easy task. Whether Liverpool will continue to push or move onto other targets remains to be seen.
