Tottenham Hotspur ‘advancing in talks’ for Liverpool target and Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven

Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur are ‘advancing in talks’ to sign Liverpool target and Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven this summer, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter (h/t Liverpool Echo).

The Reds have been linked with the centre-back this summer. However, Spurs are interested in acquiring the services of the 22-year-old and are close to an agreement with the Bundesliga outfit.

As things stand, negotiations between the North London side and the Volkswagen Arena side have formally begun regarding a move for the Holland national in the ongoing transfer window.

Wolfsburg signed Van de Ven in the summer of 2021. The defender’s first year in Germany was spent as a bit-part player. However, the 22-year-old established himself in the Bundesliga outfit’s starting lineup last season.

In the previous campaign, the Holland national was a key player for Niko Kovacs’s team as they finished eighth in the league table. He mostly played as a central defender but was also deployed as a left-back on occasions.

At the moment, Tottenham have the likes of Cristian Romero, Eric Dier, Ben Davies and Davinson Sanchez in their ranks. However, most of them were underwhelming for Spurs in the 2022/23 term as the Lilywhites failed to put in consistent performances.

On the other hand, Liverpool’s backline was all over the place as well in the previous campaign. Virgil van Dijk, who has been a goliath for us in recent years, looked human and made several errors.

Jurgen Klopp was also unable to rely on Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate due to their fitness issues. Joe Gomez did not make the most of his chances either, while Nat Phillips hardly got any game time.

Therefore, we could evidently do with a few additions to our defence this summer. Van de Ven is a promising talent. But it looks like Tottenham will beat us to him.
