“That’s the target”- Liverpool ace lays out ambitions for upcoming season

Liverpool star Cody Gakpo talks about mindset heading into next season

The Reds did not have a campaign to remember last time around as we struggled throughout all competitions. Jurgen Klopp’s side only finished in the fifth spot in the league and saw themselves out of the Champions League RO16 after a loss to Real Madrid. However, heading into the upcoming season, Liverpool star Cody Gakpo seems to have adjusted to life on Merseyside and spoke about the players’ mindset for next season and beyond.

Speaking to the club’s official website on the players’ return to training after a summer break, Gakpo talked through the excitement of being back and spoke about carrying the momentum generated towards the end of last season, as we endured a streak of nine unbeaten games.

“I think everybody has the same mindset at the moment: we really want to achieve something this year again. That’s the target and we will train hard for that.”

“We ended, I think, the campaign pretty good with a nice run of winning games, and I hope we start there again and do that for the whole season: win prizes together and show everybody how good we are.”

Gakpo himself was extremely impressive after his transfer from PSV in the January window as the Dutchman scored seven goals and provided three assists in 26 appearances across all competitions.

The next season shall mark a lot of new beginnings for the club. Without the services of regulars like James Milner, Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Also, it is the first time in a full season under Jurgen Klopp that the Reds have failed to secure UCL football.

Mindset within the squad

While the upcoming season marks a lot of things for the club, it surely is a very exciting one. With the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cody Gakpo keen on taking up new roles within the squad combined with new faces in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, there surely is a lot to look forward to.

Speaking of what Gakpo told the club’s website, Liverpool looked far from their tag of mentality monsters for the better part of last season. However, trusting the former PSV man and his words, the upcoming season will show us that last year was just a blip and the Reds will bounce back better than ever.

There are a substantial number of pre-season games the Reds will play this season indicating that the gaffer is open to the idea of experimentation to get the best of all the players.

The youngsters in the squad including the likes of Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez will remain crucial as ever in the Reds’ quest for success. Hopefully, they will go on to become key players in the Klopp rebuild.

Liverpool are famous for being ‘mentality monsters’ as mentioned earlier. Hopefully, we are back at our best, owning this tag better than anyone else in the league.
