Liverpool preparing a move for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia

According to Football Insider (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are preparing to make a formal offer to sign Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp wants the young Belgian and has been working hard behind the scenes to get this deal done in this transfer window.

By now, we know that Arsenal and Chelsea are also in the race for Lavia, who was signed by Southampton from Manchester City last summer.

The good thing about the latest news revelation is that the 19-year-old is attracted by the project at Anfield and would like to make a move.

What that might do is force the Saints to lower their asking price from the original £50m. Regardless of how good the player was for them, they are a Championship club now. Demanding that level of transfer fee won’t suffice, that too for a young player who has had one season of senior football so far.

Liverpool have done well to rectify the midfield deficiencies by signing Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. Fabinho’s future is uncertain with Al-Ittihad on the horizon and Jordan Henderson has agreed on terms with Al-Ettifaq.

So, if the Reds lose both Fabinho and Henderson in the coming days, they might need to sign two midfielders to not leave themselves short in that department.

Although signing Lavia will become a necessity then, Klopp could focus on signing an experienced defensive midfielder to help the 19-year-old settle into the squad.

Let’s hope the futures of the two senior midfielders are sorted soon regardless of what the outcome is. Liverpool should push harder for the Lavia deal and keep an eye on signing another defensive midfielder as well. An interesting few days coming up in the market for the Reds.
