Mauricio Pochettino confirms Liverpool target Levi Colwill will stay at Chelsea

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has ruled out an exit for Levi Colwill this summer amidst interest from Liverpool.

The 20-year-old centre-back, as per Liverpool Echo, has drawn interest from the Reds this summer. Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate remain our top three centre-backs.

Joe Gomez is there for depth and as a potential backup for Trent Alexander-Arnold at right back. Moreover, Matip and Van Dijk are in their 30s.

Colwill to Liverpool?

So, it makes a lot of sense to sign a new centre-back this summer. But if we will manage to do that, the player’s name will not be Levi Colwill.

That is because Poch has confirmed Colwill will stay at Stamford Bridge this summer. He said at a recent press conference in the USA:

“He is going to continue with us, I am happy with him, his performance was good today, better than what I expected because it is only the first game with us after the season with Brighton. I am so happy, he can be one of the greatest centre-backs in England.”

Chelsea seem to be getting lucky recently with their loanees. Conor Gallagher broke through in their first team after a loan spell at Crystal Palace in the 2021-22 season. The following season, they discovered Colwill’s talents during his loan stint at Brighton & Hove Albion.

One can’t rule out this transfer only because Liverpool are Chelsea’s rivals in the Premier League. With the sales of Kai Havertz (Arsenal), Mateo Kovacic (Manchester City) and Mason Mount (Manchester United), they have shown they don’t really care about strengthening their direct opponents if they get cash.

But we can rule it out because of Poch’s comments. And the Argentine comments come after a summer where the Blues lost Cesar Azpilicueta to Atletico Madrid while Kalidou Koulibaly left for Saudi Arabia.

To add to that, Wesley Fofana picked up an ACL injury recently. Chelsea would be foolish to sell Colwill and Liverpool should look at other targets.
