Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister revealed
how the team’s pre-season camp in Germany was important for their preparations ahead of the new season. The new summer signing played another 45 minutes in this pre-season when the Reds played out a thrilling 4-4 draw against second-division German side Greuther Furth.
This was the last day in Germany for Liverpool as they will now go to Singapore in Asia to play two more pre-season games against Leicester City and Bayern Munich before returning to England.
Here’s what Mac Allister said about the result against Greuther Furth and the camp in Jurgen Klopp’s home country (h/t Liverpool website):
“It’s a pre-season game. Of course we always want to win, but that’s not the most important thing. We know we have to improve in a couple of things but it’s good to get some minutes in the tank.
“There is a lot of positive things [to take from the camp]. I am a new player so I still have to know my teammates, their strengths and their weaknesses, but I think there are really good players here and we can build something important.”
The Argentina international has settled into the squad very well and looked comfortable in midfield in the two games so far. A few days ago, Klopp talked about his quality and how the attackers in the team are licking their lips to receive incisive passes from the midfielder.
With over a week in Singapore to come together, Mac Allister will further gel with the players, understand their strengths and weaknesses and hopefully create partnerships that can be useful when the main season starts.
We won’t be surprised if the former Brighton player starts the season as a defensive midfielder. Liverpool are without a number six with Fabinho and Jordan Henderson almost confirming their exits to Saudi Arabia.
Stefan Bajcetic is another option but he is yet to train with the squad after picking up a strange injury in the latter half of last season.
In the current hybrid system, Mac Allister’s quality on and off the ball would be great to harness in the deeper-lying role. With Trent Alexander-Arnold tucking in from right-back, Liverpool would have two highly-skilled players in the quarterback position to dictate the tempo of games.
