Liverpool target Romeo Lavia unused substitute for second straight game for Southampton

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that ‘talks with Liverpool continue’ for Southampton as they look to resolve Romeo Lavia’s future.

The Belgian midfielder arrived at St. Mary’s from Manchester City last summer as an unknown quantity. He became a pinned starter in the season that followed and was one of their best players despite the team getting relegated to the Championship.

Lavia is good enough and fit enough to play every single game for Southampton throughout its entirety. But he has now been kept as an unused substitute in both of their games this season.

The Saints benched him in their Championship opener against Sheffield Wednesday, which they won 2-1 without bringing the former Manchester City starlet off the bench. But against Gillingham, he was completely left out of the matchday squad.

Lavia to Anfield?

The Saints lost 3-1 against the Gills at Priestfield in the EFL Cup yesterday (8 August). This is, of course, a massive sign that Lavia is set to leave the club.

It can only mean good news for Liverpool. Fans were enraged when news broke that their third bid was rejected by Southampton earlier this week.

According to the Independent, the Reds’ £46million bid (with add-ons) was instantly rebuffed, considering the Championship club value him at £50 million. Thankfully, the two clubs are still believed to be in talks for the player.

Given his ability and potential, it is unlikely he would want to play in the second division. WIth the 2024 UEFA Euros not far away, he would want to make sure he gets a call-up to the Belgium squad as well.
