Darwin Nunez missed the Liverpool training due to media duties rather than any injury

As reported in Liverpool Echo, fears of Darwin Nunez having picked up an injury have been allayed because the Uruguayan missed the training on Wednesday due to media duties.

When the training images came out later in the day, Nunez was nowhere to be seen in them. Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic were seen training with the team which is good news for games after Chelsea.

Later on, Echo revealed that the Uruguay striker was fulfilling his media duties in the AXA Training Centre. Hence, he is not a doubt for the Reds’ first game of the season against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Nunez was in great form in pre-season games. He scored four goals and assisted one in five appearances. His link-up with Mohamed Salah was the highlight for many.

After a slightly erratic first season at Anfield following a move from Benfica last summer, the 24-year-old should be expected to kick on and have a consistent impact on the team’s potential success in the next nine months.

While Cody Gakpo can play as a nine and an eight, Diogo Jota prefers to operate as the former. So, Nunez has a direct competition with two players if he wants to play in his natural position.

But, we saw the 24-year-old playing 15 times on the left wing last season. It might be due to the fact that Gakpo and Jota were doing well as a nine and also because Luis Diaz missed the majority of the campaign.

Take nothing away from the Uruguayan though. He scored seven goals and assisted two while playing as a left-winger for Liverpool. His versatility, speed and hopefully better finishing prowess could be key in how Jurgen Klopp’s men fare this season.
