Latest Moises Caicedo update as Liverpool and Chelsea seek clarity on the situation
Sky Sports’ Melissa Reddy took to Twitter to provide an update on the Moises Caicedo transfer saga involving Chelsea and Liverpool alongside Brighton.
Just a few hours after Brighton accepted Liverpool’s record bid of £110m yesterday, Fabrizio Romano via Twitter broke the news that Caicedo only wants to switch to Chelsea even though the Blues are yet to match Brighton’s ask for the 21-year-old Ecuadorian international. Following a day’s worth of transfer back and forth, here is what Reddy had to say on the situation via Twitter:
“Until Chelsea make a formal British record offer that Brighton accept for Moises Caicedo, not much has significantly changed. As one source put it “more tweets about what they’ll do than what they actually have.” CFC have known what Liverpool’s bid & structure is since Thursday.”
“Strong suggestions Chelsea hoped Liverpool would withdraw their bid and walk away on Friday allowing them to negotiate a more favourable fee and structure with Brighton, which didn’t happen. Next developments very interesting in light of FFP/Premier League P&S rules”
This means that Chelsea are at crossroads as they hoped that Liverpool would retract their bid following Caicedo’s intentions to join Chelsea. However, the Reds have remained persistent with their bid and for the Blues to potentially get Caicedo, they would have to match Brighton’s ask, or go beyond Liverpool’s bid.
Now at this point, our intention is to secure the services of an additional midfield in the hope of registering him before the Chelsea game on Sunday now take a rest. Even if magically, the deal goes through now, there is little to no chance that we feature the player in the game at Stamford Bridge.
Never-Ending Saga
Having said that, from what it appears, Liverpool hold the upper hand in this saga of negotiations and bids. The fact that we are the only team to meet Brighton’s demands is greatly beneficial for the Reds. Claims also come through that Caicedo would happily join either Liverpool or Chelsea, subject to whoever puts in the highest bid.
From a fans’ perspective, if it takes too much to convince a player to join Liverpool, they’re probably not the right fit for the Reds. While there is no end to this saga yet, we know that we have the financial means to launch a bid for any other top-quality midfielder in the world as well. We surely have plenty of other transfer targets that suit the Reds’ style of play.
Caicedo is not the end of the market for a club as big as Liverpool. Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Chelsea are working on a bid but is yet to tweet about a bid being made or it being accepted. It seems imminent, though.

As fans, we surely seek more clarity on this Caicedo front in the coming days, and best believe that the clubs do so too. Hopefully, this ends in a favourable situation for the Reds. We might get two top-class players for the price of one if the player doesn’t join the Reds.
