Jurgen Klopp targets Champions League qualification as the minimum target for this season

Talking to Sky Sports ahead of the season opener against Chelsea, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has outlined the bare minimum target of qualifying for the Champions League.

The Reds will play in the Europa League this season after missing out on the Europe’s elite competition by four points to Newcastle United last time around.

Prior to the 2022/23 campaign, Liverpool qualified for Champions League football in each of the full seasons Klopp has been in charge of the team.

So, returning to that level is the bare minimum they must achieve before potentially thinking about mounting a title challenge. Here’s what the boss said (quoted by Liverpool Echo):

“We have to qualify for the Champions League, that’s it. The earlier you can do that, the more likely you can go for more.”

The league is so tough these days that almost six to seven teams are vying for the top four spots in the table. Among them, Arsenal and Manchester City are already favourites to be in there.

So, as much as it is easy to say that this is our minimum target, the team has to respond after a dismal last season. Changes have been made to the squad, especially in the midfield department.

It would be interesting to see how the new players adapt to the situation and how Virgil van Dijk leads the team out with pressure and expectation on him to deliver after a below-par campaign last time around.

With Europa League games on Thursday nights set to scrabble the scheduling of some of the league games, it is important for Liverpool to start well and make sure to carry the momentum when the midweek calendar kicks in.
