Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino says draw against Liverpool was not a fair result
You could not surely disagree with him wholeheartedly as Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino claimed that the Blues’ 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge was not a fair result.
Even though Liverpool took the lead early on thanks to a beauty of a goal from Luis Diaz, our joy lasted precisely 19 minutes. You could call it a soft goal, but fair play to him as Axel Disasi won a header against Trent Alexander-Arnold near the back post to equalise for Poch and Co. Speaking of the game and the result via BBC, here is what the Argentine had to say:
“I don’t believe it is [draw a fair result]. I think we deserved a little bit more overall. We feel pleased, but at the same time disappointed because we wanted to win and we deserved to win, but it is only the beginning.”
While Liverpool were greater in terms of the number of attackers on the pitch, Chelsea’s smart operation in the midfield, especially Enzo Fernandez, gave the Reds an extremely tough time. Cody Gakpo was literally out of position throughout his time on the pitch, and it is not a good idea to deploy him on the side of a midfield three instead of playing him behind a striker.
Chelsea had most of the possession in the game and understandably. None of our midfielders today were the kind who retain possession. All three of them are more or less, offense minded, and it showed. Moreover, Chelsea also missed four big chances in the game [stats from FotMob]. Both teams had goals ruled off for offside, but that’s that to it.
Tough to disagree Poch!
What the Reds can take away from this game in a positive light is the performance of our centre-back duo. Both Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate looked like they were back at their best, and it surely is going to improve from this point onwards. Hopefully, the Reds do not have to deal with a lot of injuries this season, or else we can rather call it a day now itself.
What Liverpool need though, and dearly, is the services of a natural #6. As mentioned earlier, Cody Gakpo in central midfield is pretty much like playing Lionel Messi in goal. The attacking form for the Reds, as expected, is positive.
We are not very far from perfection to put it straight. Two more signings, and we could surely be back at the pinnacle of English football. Get out in the transfer market, and find a natural #6 capable of bringing instant impact. Also, look to buy a left-sided centre-back, and our system should be sorted.

All easier said than done though. Hopefully, the game has given Jurgen Klopp the clarity required heading into the Bournemouth game. There is a reason why he is in the place he is. Just the right support in terms of finances, and most of Liverpool’s problems could cease to exist come the first game after the transfer deadline.
