West Ham United eyeing a move for Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

According to a transfer update in The Times (subscription required), West Ham United have Liverpool defender Joe Gomez in their discussion for a potential move late in the window.

In the last 24 hours, Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad have also shown their interest in the England international. They believe his versatility to play anywhere across the defensive line is a fantastic trait to have.

Gomez came on to replace the dismissed Virgil van Dijk against Newcastle United and did an exceptional job. His performance was one of the main reasons why Liverpool did not concede while playing with a man down for 65 minutes. That base was made for Darwin Nunez to score the goals and win the game.

The 26-year-old signed a new contract with the Reds last summer. Regardless of injury issues, he is one of the important members of the squad.

The Englishman is not only a centre-back option for Jurgen Klopp. He can be played as a fullback on either side and expect a decent outcome.

What we saw on Sunday told us that if Gomez has an injury-free season, he can produce something special for the team. Highly doubt Klopp and Liverpool would want to lose a player of this calibre, that too so late in the window.

As a matter of fact, the Reds look short in that department even with the Englishman in the squad. It would be great if the owners back the manager to make a defensive signing and make this squad rounded enough to compete for the title with Manchester City and Arsenal.

The club is eyeing a midfield addition at the moment though, with Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch high on the list.
