As per James Pearce for The Athletic (subscription required), Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton could be kept at the club as a cover despite interest from Championship clubs.
Morton, who had an excellent loan spell at Blackburn Rovers last time around, was wanted by Hull City this summer.
But, Jurgen Klopp is leaning towards keeping the 20-year-old for this season as a cover in defensive midfield.
Morton has returned to training after breaking his foot late last season when on loan at Blackburn. He can play as a lone six or in a double midfield pivot.
It feels like Liverpool want to keep hold of a young homegrown midfielder who has the potential to be a good squad player in the near future.
If the 20-year-old stays, he could get game time in domestic cup competitions and in the Europa League group stage matches.
If we look at his numbers for Blackburn last season, the midfielder had a pass accuracy of 82% (69% accuracy in opposition half, made 1.5 tackles per game and won 51% of the total duels contested (Sofascore
). Although not record-breaking, these are good returns from a young player in a demanding league like the Championship.By keeping him, Liverpool are accepting that they are short in the defensive midfield department. They signed Wataru Endo as the only number six since the departure of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.
Although we can expect a lot more from Stefan Bajcetic this season, it would be foolish to put undue pressure on him. We have seen how ineffective Alexis Mac Allister was when asked to play the six role.
Coming back to Morton, let’s hope he gets the requisite game time if he stays here. He deserves the chance after doing well on loan at Blackburn.
