Liverpool defender Nat Phillips is on route to Scotland to complete his loan move to Celtic

As per the latest update from Glasgow Live, Liverpool defender Nat Phillips is travelling to Scotland to complete his season-long loan move to Celtic.

In the last 24 hours, Phillips was strongly linked with a move to Middlesbrough. It seems like Celtic have stolen a march in this deal. Earlier in the window, the 26-year-old was wanted by Leeds United. But, for some reason, that move did not materialise.

If all things go well, this would be a good move for the player. He should play a lot more for Celtic than what he would have at Liverpool this season regardless of the shortage of options at the back for us.

Phillips is a decent centre-back who did a job for the Reds in the second half of the 2020/21 season before having a good loan spell at Bournemouth.

Although not fit for purpose at Anfield due to his style of play and defending, he could do well under Brendan Rodgers at Celtic.

With only two years remaining in his Liverpool contract, let’s hope he has a good loan spell at the home of the Scottish Champions. Once that happens, there might be a case for the Reds to offer the player to them at a budget fee next summer.

Looking at the options Jurgen Klopp has at the back, three of them are injury-prone – Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate. The latter has already picked up his first injury of the season. Virgil van Dijk is 32 now and not getting any younger.

We saw Jarell Quansah playing the last 15 minutes of the Newcastle United game. While he is a good young defender, there shouldn’t be much expectation from him this season. The club must work their way towards signing a young centre-back before the Friday night deadline.
