Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano believes Argentine ace Alexis Mac Allister is a ‘great signing’ for Liverpool this summer

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has called Liverpool FC’s recent signing, Alexis Mac Allister, the bargain of the summer transfer window in the Premier League. The Reds made important moves during the summer, investing randomly in acquiring four new midfielders.

Among these signings were Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch. Furthermore, the English giants secured the services of Mac Allister for a £35 million fee, poaching him from fellow Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Argentine midfielder stood out as one of Brighton’s top performers in the previous season when Roberto De Zerbi’s team exceeded expectations by finishing sixth in the Premier League. The 24-year-old also made a huge impression during last year’s World Cup, contributing to Argentina’s third tournament victory in their history.

In the current 2023-24 Premier League season, the midfielder has featured in all four of Liverpool’s opening matches. His red card against AFC Bournemouth was later overturned, allowing him to participate in every game until now.

Mac Allister’s departure from Brighton was widely expected this summer, as the Reds were linked with a move. However, Liverpool managed to secure his services for a lower fee due to a release clause in his previous contract.

Romano has now praised Jurgen Klopp’s side for making this “excellent signing” at the outset of their summer rebuilding efforts. While speaking with Caught Offside, the transfer guru said:

“I want to mention Alexis Mac Allister [as the bargain deal of the summer]. For me, this is a great signing by Liverpool. I think they did a very good job. […] For a fee which is close to €40 million, I think this is something incredible.”

In a market where players like Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo are going for a huge price, signing a quality player for anything less than £50m seems like a victory.

Mac Allister had a good preseason, and he followed it by putting in a great showing in the midfield in the last four games. Pre-season can sometimes be deceiving, but the South American has shown his readiness to thrive in the Liverpool squad, provided he’s given the right support.

At present, he stands out as the marquee signing of the summer, regardless of the price tag. When you bring a World Cup winner into your team, you’re adding a fully developed individual, a player who’s already at the top of their game.

There’s no need for the midfield general to follow the path of someone like Trent Alexander-Arnold and start in a different position just to get playing time; Liverpool signed him to maximise his strengths.
