Liverpool superstar Darwin Nunez was on fire for Uruguay against Chile in the CONMEBOL FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers earlier this week.
He assisted both of Nicolas de la Cruz’s goals at the Centenario as Marcelo Bielsa’s team won the game 3-1. It was a different Nunez to what Liverpool fans have been accustomed to.
The assist for the first goal was a deft first-time pass from Nunez’s weak foot inside the box. The second assist saw the former SL Benfica man down the left flank playing in a simple low-cross to the goal-scorer.
Fans were left impressed by Nunez, including former Liverpool star Luis Suarez. Nunez posted on his Instagram after the game:
“We started the playoffs in the best way possible, winning at home to the joy of everyone. Thanks for the support! We started the play-offs in the best way possible, winning at home to the joy of everyone. Thanks for the support!”
Suarez, who played for the Reds until his move to Barcelona in 2014 — eight years before Nunez’s arrival at Anfield — commented:
“Way to go Darwin! Tremendous match and starting winning is always important! Let’s go up with everything that’s just started”
Those who follow Nunez’s Instagram account would know Suarez often comments on his posts with positive messages. Their friendship is clear and perhaps Suarez sees in Nunez Uruguay’s next big thing.
Nunez has started the season in sensational fashion. His brace against Newcastle United felt like a turning point in his career here. The 24-year-old may not have scored against Aston Villa in our 3-0 win at home.
But he had a role to play in two of those goals. He doesn’t have the close control and the tendency to drop deep like Roberto Firmino, but he seems to be blossoming as a chance-creator for the Reds — a new facet to the deadly goal-scorer’s game.
