Graeme Souness sees Liverpool finishing first or second in the league this season
Graeme Souness has expressed his belief that Liverpool will finish the 2023/24 season as either champions or runners-up, firmly establishing themselves as serious contenders for the Premier League title.
Liverpool’s start to the current campaign has improved two-fold compared to the previous season, and after five matches, they find themselves in first place. However, the standing is still subject to the results of Tottenham and Manchester City, who are yet to kick-off. City, if victorious against West Ham, could take the lead in the table, while a win for Tottenham against Sheffield would put them on level points with Liverpool. Speaking of the Reds’ finish in the league this season, here is what Souness had to say via Mail Online:
I’ll make a bold statement about the Premier League race, which resumes today: Liverpool will finish first or second this season. I see a stronger Liverpool,”
“Our football needs a challenge to Manchester City’s dominance and Liverpool can provide it. They are the biggest threat to Pep Guardiola winning four titles on the trot.”
“This would no doubt be disputed by those closer to either of the high-flying North London clubs, or on the east side of Manchester, at this very early stage.”
Having secured the last three league titles, Manchester City remain the favourites to clinch the championship. Their previous title win was part of a treble that included the Champions League and FA Cup. Additionally, last year’s runners-up, Arsenal, have bolstered their squad significantly in the transfer market, and Spurs, despite the departure of Harry Kane to Bayern, appear reinvigorated under the guidance of new coach Ange Postecoglou.
However, Souness has taken note of Liverpool’s early-season performances and believes they will be formidable contenders this season. But as Souness rightly pointed out, our new signings fit our system like a glove and have transformed the midfield.
Can The Reds Win The League This Season?
The creative aspect of things, the work rates and the defensive contributions have all been great bar the odd putting a foot wrong here and there. All in all, the only major chunk of our complaining has to come from the fact that the Reds leave it until after 80 minutes to seal the results of games.
Souness’s conviction in Liverpool’s potential to compete for the Premier League title sets the stage for an exciting and fiercely competitive season.
