Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp talks about Alexis Mac Allister after Wolves win

Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister faced a challenging return to club action after the international break, a sentiment shared by many players adjusting to the rhythm of domestic football following international duties.

In Liverpool’s recent clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Mac Allister found himself in the starting lineup. However, his match got off to an unfavourable start when he received a yellow card within the opening four minutes. This early setback was certainly indicative of a challenging first half for the midfielder, prompting Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to make a halftime substitution, replacing Mac Allister with Luis Diaz. At that juncture, the Reds were trailing 1-0 to Wolverhampton.

Mac Allister’s situation was somewhat unique as he had only rejoined Liverpool’s training sessions on Friday, having spent time away on international duty with the Argentina national team. During his international commitments, the World Cup winner had to use breathing apparatus to cope with the high-altitude conditions in Bolivia. Such conditions can be physically demanding and affect a player’s fitness.

Speaking of Macca, here is what Klopp had to say via ECHO:

“He was done. Yellow card, and he was exhausted in the first half already.”

“We know how good Alexis is; in the first half his decision-making, we saw during the week when he had the oxygen mask on, I thought a couple of times they should have left it on a little bit longer – that would have helped maybe!”

“It was just tough. When you’re in a game like this, it’s pretty likely you’ll come to a challenge a bit too late, and then you have the second yellow, and that’s it. That’s all.”

“He had good moments in the first half, but he had some other moments as well, and you could see them. He was not really disappointed when we took him off. I think he was rather relieved.”

Macca For The Reds

Despite the initial challenges, Liverpool managed to turn the game around in the second half. Goals from Cody Gakpo and Andy Robertson helped the Reds regain control and take the lead. The match’s climax arrived when Hugo Bueno inadvertently deflected Harvey Elliott’s strike into his own net, sealing all three points for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

After the game, Mac Allister took to Instagram to share his thoughts on the victory, acknowledging the difficulties of returning to club action after the international break. He emphasized the importance of securing a win under such circumstances and expressed his satisfaction with the outcome.

However, Mac Allister’s commitment and dedication to both his national team and Liverpool illustrate his versatility and willingness to contribute on multiple fronts. And the fact that the Reds kicked off pretty early at 12:30 even with our South American contingent returning so late only in time for just one training session.
