Newcastle United are aiming to tie down their star midfielder Bruno Guimaraes amid strong interest from Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool
According to the journalist Ben Jacobs (h/t the Liverpool Echo), Newcastle United are planning to hand a new contract extension to their star player Bruno Guimaraes as Liverpool dangers linger close.
The Magpies have been eager to secure the Brazilian midfielder’s commitment, especially given the attention he has garnered from top clubs. The 25-year-old has been engaged in discussions with his parent club regarding a lucrative contract extension since the latter part of the previous season.
Liverpool inquired about his availability during the summer transfer window but were informed that the Brazilian player was not available for transfer.
His representatives have pushed for the inclusion of a release clause in the new contract, which could potentially exceed £100 million. Newcastle are determined to prevent him from moving to a rival club.
As quoted by Liverpool Echo, Journalist Jacobs said:
“It’s going to be a very high number, well in excess of £100million. If you’re the player, you may want that release clause because it gives you an out if Newcastle, for example, don’t get Champions League football. But the Guimaraes camp will have to decide whether it’s better to have a giant release clause or no release clause in terms of potentially being open to a move in the long-term.”
Guimaraes, whose existing contract runs until 2026, is on the verge of extending it until 2028. He joined Newcastle in January 2022 from Lyon.
The Reds targeted the South American star but had other options in mind as well. Liverpool ultimately signed Ryan Gravenberch on deadline day, bolstering their midfield options alongside previous signings such as Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Wataru Endo.
This has prompted the Magpies to take swift action, as they are eager to secure a new contract for him in Tyneside. Their aim is to create obstacles that would make it challenging for Liverpool to pursue his signing in the upcoming transfer window.
The Reds have the financial strength to make a high-profile move, but it would be difficult to execute if their preferred targets signed a new contract. Klopp’s side has powerful midfield players at their disposal, and they can make the most of it if they use them wisely.

Although Guimaraes could be a valuable player for Liverpool, the club has signed a particular player only when it is an absolute necessity. They could prefer to sign a new centre-back rather than invest heavily in another midfielder.
