Steven Gerrard says he would have ‘put up with’ Brendan Rodgers for six months of Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool

Steven Gerrard has remarkably claimed that he would have put up with Brendan Rodgers if it meant getting to play under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

The legendary midfielder left us in the summer of 2015 and went to MLS side LA Galaxy. By his own admission, he did it because he did not want to be a substitute at Liverpool.

But a few months after his exit, Rodgers was sacked by the Anfield outfit and replaced with Jurgen Klopp in November that year. What followed was a new chapter in the history of the club… a chapter anyone in the world would have wanted to be a part of if they knew what was at the end of it.

Steven Gerrard is a Liverpool legend.

Gerrard, who is now managing Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, said in a video shared by The Anfield Wrap on TikTok (h/t Mirror):

“I still felt I was the best midfielder there at the time. But in hindsight, if I’d have knew what was going to come off, 100 percent I’d have signed the year extension and I’d have put up with four or five months of Brendan to get six months of Klopp for sure”

Not putting words in his mouth, but it almost seems like he is suggesting that he would have tolerated Rodgers in order to play under Klopp. The fact that he wasn’t against playing as a substitute under Klopp as compared to the Northern Irishman also tells a lot about his opinion of the two managers.

His jersey was passed down to Naby Keita a few years later, and what a terrible move that was. Injuries were to blame but the Guinea international’s spell here was one to forget.

We now have Dominik Szoboszlai to do justice to that iconic number. Gerrard under Klopp would have been some sight. As was the case with James Milner, Klopp has proved that age isn’t a barrier for him if the player is still contributing to the team.

We had a pretty good debut season under the German manager but it could have been even more special if SG8 was around to lead the team. There is no doubt that Klopp would also wish this scenario happened. But alas…
