Liverpool miss out on yet another midfield target as Bruno Guimaraes agrees a new deal with Newcastle United

Liverpool were rumoured to be interested in numerous midfielders from Europe during the summer transfer window. While the club has signed several quality midfield options, it appears that one of their known targets is no longer a viable option for the future.

Reds’ target Bruno Guimaraes has been in discussions about extending his contract with Newcastle United since the latter part of the 2022-2023 season and has now reached an agreement to stay with the club until June 2028.

The Brazilian midfielder joined Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022 for a transfer fee of £40 million, initially signing a four-and-a-half-year deal that was set to expire in June 2026. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Magpies have secured a new contract with the 25-year-old, which includes a release clause of approximately £100m.

Although Guimaraes has expressed his desire to continue playing for Newcastle, he did express some frustration with the contract negotiations that faced delays during the pre-season.

Since his arrival, the South American talent has made a significant impact, scoring 10 goals in 63 appearances for Eddie Howe’s side and playing a crucial role in the team’s qualification for the Champions League last season.

To be honest, it never seemed like a feasible transfer for Liverpool, mainly due to Newcastle’s huge financial demands and their participation in the Champions League this season, which suggests they’ll be competitive at the top of the league for a while.

Considering that this is Howe’s team’s first season in the European competition’s top tier, it might lead to a dip in their domestic performance, potentially creating opportunities for some of their key players to leave.

Guimaraes is certainly one of those top-quality players, and it’s understandable that sporting director Jorg Schmadtke would have seen him as a prime target in our midfield rebuild efforts this summer.

Now, it appears that our chances of signing the former Lyon midfielder are slim unless the Reds are willing to splash a lucrative sum on the transfer, should Klopp’s side truly believe that he’s made for the club.

Considering our recent signings of Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch, along with the talents already in our squad, our midfield options seem well-stocked.

While Guimaraes may still be on our radar, it would take time for such a deal to materialise. Hence, it is better to focus on our current options and bring out the best in them.
