“Play any position”- Jurgen Klopp praises Liverpool ace for versatile performance against Leicester

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is full of praise for Curtis Jones

Jurgen Klopp couldn’t hide his delight with Curtis Jones’ exceptional performance as the young academy graduate donned the captain’s armband for Liverpool.

The decision to name Jones as captain got to him just a day before the match and it remained coupled with a unique challenge – he would play in an unfamiliar position, right-back. Here is what Klopp playfully revealed via ECHO

:

“It was a top performance, I have to say, for the first time for him in a strange position, he did really. I liked it a lot.”

“He is in a good moment so he could probably play any position at the moment. We will try to use him as often as possible in his natural position.”

The manager also emphasized that the choice to deploy Jones in this position was strategic. With Stefan Bajcetic’s playing time under careful management and Joe Gomez’s fitness not yet at full capacity, as is the case with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Klopp needed a versatile solution. Curtis Jones fit the bill perfectly on the night.

Klopp’s faith in Jones’ football intelligence paid off handsomely, as the young midfielder adapted seamlessly to his new role. His ability to control the game from the right-back position impressed Klopp immensely. The manager emphasized that Jones enjoys being on the ball and that his deep position allowed him to have a significant impact on the match.

Reflecting on Jones’ mature and composed performance, Klopp couldn’t help but commend him for his debut in an unfamiliar position.

Klopp’s final message was clear – the Scouser is a versatile talent who can certainly contribute effectively in multiple positions. The manager intends to utilise him in his natural midfield role as often as possible while appreciating the young midfielder’s ability to step up wherever needed.

Liverpool star Curtis Jones has been growing in stature in the last few months.

The game against Leicester also marked the first time that Jones led the first team. For someone who has risen from the Youth Academy to the first team and also captains the squad, it must be a proud moment for the 22-year-old.

Klopp’s willingness to deploy Jones in different positions highlights the young midfielder’s value to the team, and fans can expect to see more of his impressive performances in the future. But hopefully, those performances come from his favoured role in central midfield.
