Fabrizio Romano reveals that Alisson Becker was not close to leaving Liverpool in the summer
Fabrizio Romano in his exclusive daily briefing for Caught Offside has now revealed that Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker was not close to calling it quits at Anfield earlier this summer.
The Brazilian shot stopper is the undisputed number one on Merseyside and is arguably the best goalkeeper in world football today. Alisson has saved us numerous times and is a formidable last line of defence.
Having a player like the 30-year-old in goal hands a major advantage to Jurgen Klopp. Not only is the Brazilian accomplished in saving shots but is excellent in his distribution skills. It more or less hands the Reds a sweeper at the back, something that helps their style going forward.
The Saudi Pro League has been able to flex their financial muscle, landing some of the best players in world football this summer. Liverpool were not exempt from the impact as Jordan Henderson and Fabinho moved to Al Ettifaq and Al Ittihad respectively. Roberto Firmino also moved to Al Ahli as a free agent after his contract at Anfield expired at the end of the 2022-23 campaign.
Two players- Mohamed Salah and Alisson were also linked but both players stayed put. Romano has now revealed that there was nothing concrete regarding the Brazilian ace.
“I’m not aware of anything concrete from Saudi for Alisson last summer, despite the rumours.”
While Romano’s revelations shed light on teams keeping an eye on the Brazilian goalkeeper, it does not appear to have progressed any further. The fact that there were no offers or negotiations more or less indicate how integral he is to Liverpool and their reluctance to even consider a sale.
“There were never concrete proposals or official bids, interest always there for a fantastic GK like Alisson but not concrete deal or negotiations.”
It is undisputable that the Saudi League is seeking top players. Alisson as one of the best in the game today will certainly attract attention. However, we hope it amounts to nothing and that the goalkeeper will retire at Anfield, a legend.
