Manuel Sierra revealed the promise Chelsea made to Caicedo that ultimately made Liverpool stand no chance
The agent of Moises Caicedo has suggested Liverpool were fighting an uphill battle in their bid to sign the midfielder due to his desire to join Chelsea instead.
Manuel Sierra, who represents Caicedo, gave an interview to Mundo Deportivo EC (h/t studiofutbol) implying the player’s preference for a switch to Stamford Bridge making things very difficult for the Reds.
Discussing Chelsea’s drawn-out transfer saga to sign Caicedo from Brighton, Sierra revealed that Liverpool suddenly entering the race to sign the Ecuador international made things difficult for the Blues.
‘Liverpool came in, we didn’t expect that. They appeared suddenly, they made things difficult; but Chelsea supported the cause to finish in blue. We ask for time for the offer to be equaled and surpassed. “It took days, but it came together.”
But he explained Chelsea had promised early on they would do everything to secure Caicedo’s signature.
According to Sierra, that long-standing interest and commitment from the Blues meant Caicedo was leaning heavily towards West London rather than Merseyside.
“Chelsea was there to support us at all times, they told us that they were going to get us out of Brighton, that they would do everything possible,”
With the player and his camp focused on finalizing a Chelsea deal, Liverpool faced a major uphill struggle to change his mind. Sierra’s comments imply that despite Jurgen Klopp‘s side making a late attempt to gazump Chelsea’s bid, Caicedo’s heart was already set on a switch to the capital.
The agent’s interview suggests Liverpool’s interest came too late, with Chelsea already deep in negotiations. Their early commitment to getting the deal done and Caicedo’s desire to join swayed the outcome, even with Liverpool pushing hard.
In the end, Chelsea persevered, matching the Reds’ offer of £110m before exceeding it with £115m. Sierra praised them for supporting their cause throughout. His telling insights indicate Liverpool barely stood a realistic chance once Chelsea had turned the player’s head.
