Liverpool sent scouts to watch talented Portuguese defender Goncalo Inacio on international duty

Goncalo Inacio is a name that has been doing the rounds in the footballing world for quite a while now and Liverpool are just one of the clubs being linked with a move for him. Such has been his performances for both Portugal and Sporting CP.

Tottenham in the summer decided to restructure and revamp their entire midfield, making signings like Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo whilst letting the likes of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho leave the club.

However, this came at the cost of reinforcing the central defence. The backline at Liverpool has been wobbly at best in the past couple of seasons. Whilst they are managing until now this campaign, it could come back to hurt them in the bigger games.

Virgil van Dijk is not the same player who once came close to winning the Ballon d’Or. Joel Matip has excellent performances followed by absolute disappointments. Joe Gomez seems to be playing better at right-back than centre-back.

Ibrahima Konate is an interesting one though. Everyone expected him to take on the mantle as a starting centre-back this campaign but due to injuries and other reasons, he has hardly featured.

Considering all these factors, the Reds might be forced to look into the market for a central defender and this is where Goncalo Inacio comes in. According to 90min.com (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool sent scouts to watch the talented 22-year-old on international duty with Portugal.

What does Inacio bring to the table? A tall centre-back who is pretty quick and has a great reading of the game, he is exceptional at bringing the ball out of the back and has a very good passing range. Being left-footed only makes him an even more exciting proposition.

Inácio’s journey from Sporting CP to possibly one of the Premier League’s stalwarts could echo the path of other Portuguese league alumni like Bruno Fernandes, who has since become a linchpin for Manchester United.

Inacio is not going to be an easy signing. He is not going to come without competition. However, we have shown in the past that we are averse to spending that extra bit more if we really want a player. Let’s see if we manage to sign him.
