Paul Scholes admits there is much Manchester United need to do to match Liverpool FC’s solid recruitment strategy
Paul Scholes has played in enough title winning Manchester United teams to recognize that Liverpool are among he clubs with a solid recruitment strategy in today’s game.
The Reds are not known to splash the cash on landing players and cannot afford to get into bidding wars with the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea or Paris Saint-Germain among others. This has seen FSG take a data driven approach where they focus on signing players who fit the system but yet have market space to grow and develop.
This has served us well, helping put together a championship winning side for a fraction of the cost. This does not mean that John Henry and Co. are averse to spending big when needed. The likes of Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk, Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai were brought in for the big bucks.
The fact that the Reds were willing to smash the British transfer record for Moises Caicedo once again show the club’s commitment to spend big, but only on the right player. This balance helps us build a strong team while also staying within our financial means.
While we do not always have a 100 percent success rate in our transfer moves, a big money signing more often than not works out at Anfield. It is a formula that Manchester United are yet to work out despite splashing the cash on numerous players under Erik tew\n Hag.
Paul Scholes is well aware of it and has now admitted that Manchester United lag behind Liverpool and Manchester City when it comes to recruitment strategy. Speaking to TNT Sports (h/t Mirror), here is what he had to say:
“We’ve come into the summer and the recruitment hasn’t been there, it’s not at the level of competing with the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.”
United went big for Mason Mount, Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana last summer. Of the trio, only Hojlund has shown some potential. Liverpool, on the other hand have more or less replaced their midfield by signing Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch. Clearly, we have outdone the Red Devils in the recruitment department once again.

Scholes is right to point out the difference in recruitment strategies between Liverpool and Manchester United. Throwing money at a problem does not make it go away and the Red Devils are yet to realise it. Liverpool, on the other hand, have a solid strategy that they are loyal to and stick with it come rain or sunshine. We for one, know which the club are better of taking.
