Liverpool discover the price-tag for Manchester City star Kalvin Phillips

While Liverpool addressed the holes in their midfield over the summer transfer window, most believed the Reds could have done better than signing a 30-year-old Wataru Endo. While that statement sounds as stupid as it does in hindsight, Liverpool could do with a set of younger defensive midfielders as well, and in that respect, have Kalvin Phillips on their transfer radar.

Even though he is not very young, Phillips is at the peak of his footballing career at 27 years old, not playing enough games at Manchester City and seeing himself benched for Rodri is certainly not going to help develop the former Leeds man as a player.

Liverpool jumping into the fray at this moment, and with both Phillips and Endo on board, the Reds could instil a sense of positive competition in that position. Manchester City are also open to the idea of parting ways with Phillips come the January transfer window. A potential price tag has been made public knowledge very recently.

A number of clubs including Liverpool show interest in signing Man City’s Kalvin Phillips.

Manchester City aim to make a profit on Phillips. They got him on board from Leeds in the summer of 2022 for £42m and to part ways with him, have set a minimum asking price of £50m. These figures are via The Mirror.

Phillips to the Reds?

Following Sandro Tonali’s 10-month suspension, even Newcastle United are among the clubs hoping to get Phillips on board, and the Reds should be swift in their pursuit of the player.

With only six appearances across all competitions for his club this season, his place in the England squad also comes under some amount of jeopardy. At least to safeguard that, it is important that the player pushes for a move come the next transfer window.

The project at Liverpool is no doubt fascinating. Our style of play post our midfield revamp over the summer has been a treat to the eyes, and a defensive midfielder might be the right addition to fill any more existing voids in the middle of the park for the Reds.

The only questions that arise in this situation are the ones circling the budget for the Reds when it comes to recruitment and whether or not City could be willing to sell to a direct rival like us. If that does anything at all, it is just inflating the price for any player for that matter. Hopefully, the Reds have a way out of this situation and find creative ways to improve their squad over the January transfer window irrespective of whether or not Phillips is among our options.
